A hospital client redesigned their medical programs in 2003 to create steerage to their own facility. However, costs were still escalating at double digits. Through the collaboration of C.M. Smith and the medical carriers, a unique set of performance metrics and utilization data was created to better understand the causes for the escalating costs. As a result of this analysis we were able to implement benefit changes and enhancements that still retained the goal of "steerage" but yet control overall costs. For the past two years, the client's medical costs are incurring in the low single digits.
